Blue and Gold Macaw
Blue and Gold Macaws are found throughout Mexico, as well as Central America, and
the northern parts of South America. Blue & Gold Macaws inhabit rainforests near rivers
and swampy areas with palms. They avoid mountainous and coastal regions. In the wild,
they visit riverbanks and cliffs made of clay soil, which they eat. Scientists think that the
soil neutralizes any toxic chemicals the birds might eat in seeds or unripe fruits,
preventing illness. It is a sad fact of life that many of these macaws, along with other
parrots often end up being passed around from home to home or rescue organisations.
This is mainly because people do not give enough thought about what they are doing
when acquiring these birds. Unfortunately habitat destruction and capture for importation
into the pet trade indicates a bleak future for these most strikingly beautiful Macaws.
